West Monroe running back Tyler Cain accounted for almost 2,000 all-purpose yards last year as the Rebels went undefeated en route to winning the 5A state title and the junior recently received his first scholarship offer as well.
"ULM offered me a couple of weeks ago," Cain said. "It came as a surprise, because I didn't really even know that they were recruiting me. I talked to their special teams coach and he told me that they were going to offer me and then I got a handwritten letter about it in the mail."
Cain, who is receiving interest from Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech, Tulane, Auburn, Duke, and TCU, doesn't have a particular favorite school in mind at this point.
"I don't have a top school right now," he said. "I do love the SEC and I think that I can play on that level. I just got back from a NIKE Camp in Texas last week. I did pretty well over there. I went with (teammates) Chuck (Hunter) and Paul (Turner).
“The three of us have talked about playing together in college and Mississippi State and TCU are two schools that have mentioned the possibility of that happening. TCU offered Chuck and Paul already, but I don't have an offer from them yet. Mississippi State hasn't offered me yet, but I talk to them all the time and they have said that the three of us could help rebuild their program."
Cain, who has a 3.6 grade point average, is a leader both in the classroom and on the field. Last year, he rushed for 1,232 yards on only 92 carries with 20 touchdowns. In addition, he added 369 receiving yards and five TDs, as well as 386 return yards and two more TDs.
Cain even completed a 47-yard pass in Week Four vs. Captain Shreve. In the Shreve game, Cain exploded for 157 yards on only three carries with two scores, including a 93-yard jaunt. In the second round of the playoffs, Cain ran for 200 yards on 12 carries vs. Thibodaux.
"Right now, I'm looking at some schools," Cain said. "I'm going to Junior Day at Auburn and Louisiana Tech and I have camp invites to several schools. I'm going to go down to Tulane as well. We're in track season right now. I run on the 4 X 100 and 4 X 200 relay teams and I also compete in the long jump and high jump."
