January Stock Report (Updated)

Southern Miss put another big target on the board with the commitment of Cameron Tom. Who could be the next to commit? Here is an update on a number of prospects very much in the mix.

High Priority:

-Gerald Sterling, DE, Aliceville (AL)- Sterling is a Washington State commitment who the new coaching staff has really started to make a push with. He's a big, athletic, strong lineman who moves very well for a 6'6, 260 sized kid. We had heard word he had committed after a visit to Southern Miss, but his phone is off and he's not talking right now.

-Christopher Robinson, DT, Shreveport (LA)- Robinson was on campus this past weekend, and while impressed, he didn't come out committed. It appears to be down to Southern Miss and Baylor for the talented prospect. A former Ole Miss commit, Robinson would provide immediate help even as a freshman. He could be the impact defensive lineman the Eagles are looking for.

-Rod Crayton, DT, Dadeville (AL)- Crayton is one of the better defensive line prospects not committed. The Eagles brought him on campus, and rumors are he left committed. He's another one that is not talking right now, so we have not been able to confirm that as of yet. He's informed the staff of his intentions, and is hoping to have a press conference to announce his decision.

-Cade Hoffman, WR, Spain Park (AL)- Hoffman took a visit this past weekend, and was not offered a scholarship. He is talking with the coaching staff again this week, and there is still a chance he could. His teammate and close friend Nick Mullens just committed, so that has to be a lure. Also, he's been offered a preferred walk-on at Auburn, so if he doesn't get that offer at Southern Miss, he'll likely be headed to the plains.

-Pat Martin, S, Arizona Western CC- Martin is a 3 star safety who has heard from just about everyone. He recently named a top three of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Southern Miss. Coach Arroyo has been looking out west for guys who could provide immediate help in the secondary. Martin fits that build, he is D1 ready right now. He's a tough get for the Eagles, but they are trying to get him on campus.

-Matthew Lyons, LB, Pierce College (CA)- Another find of Coach Arroyo, Lyons has a ton of upside. Quick to the ball and fast as a LB, he loves what he's hearing from the coaches in that scheme. The Eagles are battling Nevada, Hawaii, Colorado State, and Houston for the prospect who also appears to be game ready right now. Lyons is expected to announce this week between a visit to UNLV or Southern Miss, so we'll know soon if the Eagles are still in the mix.

-Jamari Staples, S/WR, Ashland (AL)- Staples told Scout.com that he'll be visiting Southern Miss the weekend of the 1st of February. He's one the previous staff was interested in, and could still be in the mix late in the game if he doesn't commit to Western Kentucky first.

-Parker Collins, OL, New Augusta (SC)- Southern Miss became the 12th team to offer Collins when they extended one last week. We are not aware of a visit, but he might be coming to Hattiesburg next weekend. Collins is an App. St. commit, but still could be holding his options open.

-Riley Arvanitis, FB, Lake Central HS, St. John (IN)- A prospect of Coach Arroyo's, Arvaitis is a guy the Eagles have gotten in on very late. A brusing fullback, he certainly has all the skills to be a punisher in short yardage situations, yet he's athletic enough to catch the ball out of the backfield. He's deciding if he'll visit Southern Miss this week.

-Jamez Applewhite, CB, Bassfield (MS)- Applewhite just yesterday received an official offer from Southern Miss, and is now a pretty high priority for the staff. The local standout has an upcoming visit with the Eagles this weekend, and don't be surprised to see a commitment out of it. He's been on the radar for the Eagles for some time now, and now that its official the Eagles have the clear lead for him.

-Dupree Roberts-Jordan, DE, Golden West CC (CA)- Roberts-Jordan, a Nevada commit, is an athletic defensive end who is the type of hybrid player that Coach Duggan loves. The Eagles have been looking for some immediate help out west defensively, and Coach Arroyo has found another talent in the JuCo ranks.

-Xavier Thigpen, DT, West Jones (MS)- Thigpen is a real find for the Eagles. This super sleeper prospect is 6'7, and very athletic. In fact, he plays forward for the basketball team. Thigpen is the type who could develop with his skill and size into a very nice player down the road and under Coach Smith's training the sky is the limit. He is rumored to have been offered by the Eagles, we are working to get a better feel on that.
