Smart visiting Wave

Tanzel Smart

2013 DT Tanzel Smart (Scotlandville) is visiting Tulane this weekend. Smart says the Green Wave and UTSA have the inside track, and that he'll visit North Texas January 25th. Read on to get the details on this decorated DT (2012 Scout.com U.S. Army All-Combine first-team DL).

Tanzel Smart picked up a Tulane offer in March 2012, and the Green Wave seek to land a commitment soon from the Scotlandville senior DT.

"Tulane wants me really bad," Smart said. "The coaches say I can come in and make a difference. I'm looking forward to seeing their facilities, and I'm interested in getting to know the coaches better.

"I already know the town because it's right here (hour drive south of Baton Rouge, 90 minutes from central Scotlandville). I'm going to ask the players about Tulane's program and school."

Smart intends on making a decision next week.

"I'll know what I want to do then," he said. "There's a chance I could commit during the Tulane visit, but I want to wait," he said.

"UTSA and Tulane lead, and I'm going to visit North Texas on January 25th. Southern Illinois wants me to visit, too, but I'm not sure if I'll take all five visits."

The state of Louisiana is well-known for producing big, athletic defensive linemen such as Smart, who is getting plenty of attention as National Signing Day gets closer.

"It's crazy right now," he said about the recruiting race.

Tulane's staff put in the work over the 10 months that have passed since Smart got the offer.

"Coach (Jon) Sumrall, Coach Speedy (Lionel Washington), C.J. (head coach Curtis Johnson) and Coach (Jason) Rollins all have been to see me in Scotlandville," he said.

"I know a couple of Tulane commits: Chris Taylor (Zachary) and Lyn Clark (O.P. Walker). I know 'of some' others like Kenneth Santa Marina (McDonogh #35). I know Jarrod Franklin (University)."

Smart has a close friend and teammate, 2013 S Dondre Dobbins, that is committed to UTSA.

"I visited UTSA (in late November)," Smart said. "Dondre and I were going to visit the same weekend, but he had to move his visit to the next weekend (Dec.). It's cool at UTSA. I like their coaches.

"They have good facilities, and it's an up-and-coming program. They talked about how Coach (Larry) Coker coached a lot of legends when he was at Miami."

Smart anchored Scotlandville's defensive front seven.

The Hornets reached the first-round of the Class 5A playoffs and narrowly missed an upset of higher-seeded NISH.

"I had a good season and was blessed to make all-state and all-metro," Smart said.
