Cajuns in contact with Lewis

Daniel Lewis

2014 DB/RB Daniel Lewis of New Iberia Senior High has his first offer courtesy of Hawaii, which has ties to the Bayou Teche area. The local Ragin' Cajuns in Lafayette have also been in steady contact with Lewis, who seeks to engineer an upset of fifth-seeded Catholic-Baton Rouge this week in the Class 5A playoffs...

Daniel Lewis nabbed his first offer in late October when Hawaii defensive backs coach Daronte' Jones pulled the trigger.

"I talked to Coach Jones this week and wished him happy birthday," said Lewis, a 5-11 1/2, 185-pounder with 4.4 speed.

Jones grew up in the New Iberia area. He served on the respective high school staffs at Jeanerette and Franklin during the early stages of his career.

Lewis has exchanged several messages with Ragin' Cajuns' head coach Mark Hudspeth via Facebook.

"I heard from Coach Hud on Sunday and Monday," he said. "He wants me to come to their game this week but I have to work Saturday.

"I like the Cajuns. They almost had a super upset of Florida. The defense really stepped up. I hope to camp with them next summer. I went to camp with (current Cajun and former NISH wide receiver) La Marcus Allen when I was a freshman. Their coaches said I look like a running back."

Lewis, who has attended a 2012 Cajuns' home contest, would like to make another short (20 mile) trip to Lafayette to see UL soon.

12th-seeded NISH is 9-2 entering this Friday's second round playoff game at Catholic-Baton Rouge.

"We have to slow down their running game," Lewis said of Catholic RBs Khalil Thomas (senior) and Derrius Guice (sophomore). "They have good backs. We'll have to play fast and intense."

Lewis could play either side of the ball in college. He hasn't taken any snaps on offense in a few weeks but the athletic junior racked up six quick rushing touchdowns early this fall.

When he isn't involved with academics (near 4.0 GPA in all honors courses), sports (football and soccer) or his local church, Lewis works at Xtreme Nutrition in New Iberia.
